Weekly Bird Identification Quiz
November 21 - November 27, 2011
How to Identify:
I thought that this was going to be a tougher bird quiz but it seems that everyone figured it out! When most birders see a small mostly brown bird like the one in this photo, they immediately think sparrow. As we take a closer look at this photo, we notice a lot of orange in the face of this bird. That coloration really helps us limit our options. We are left with LeConte’s, Nelson’s, and Saltmarsh Sparrows. There is very obvious white edging on the tertials of the bird featured in the quiz. This should lead us to identify this bird as a LeConte’s Sparrow.
