Weekly Bird Identification Quiz
June 1 - June 7, 2009

How to Identify:
From this picture we can easily tell that this is some species of hawk. Since it is sitting in a grassy area we can also concentrate more on grassland hawks. Due to the short tail and large size we can conclude that this is a buteo. The very pale overall appearance especially on the base of the tail and head identify this as a Ferruginous Hawk. Due to the brown back and brown speckling on the belly we can also conclude that this is a juvenile bird.
