How to Identify:
At first glance this is easily recognizable as a woodpecker from its shape and the fact that it is clinging to a tree. The all black back with a white patch in the primaries (outer wing feathers) and red patch on the head are key points in the ID. The white head of this White-headed Woodpecker is also barely visible below the pine needles.
