Weekly Bird Identification Quiz
February 1 - February 7, 2010
How to Identify:
Part of the challenge with identifying this week’s quiz bird was just finding the bird. Once found it was a relatively easy identification. One of the best clues to the identity was its behavior of clinging to the side of a tree. This limits the possibilities to woodpeckers, nuthatches, and Brown Creeper. The amount of brown and the long tail eliminates any of the nuthatches and most of the woodpeckers. Flickers and Arizona Woodpeckers are the only woodpeckers that would show any brown as this bird does. The Arizona Woodpecker would not show the amount of barring on the wings and long tail that this bird shows though. The flickers don’t match up either as they are a much lighter brown and their secondaries would be light brown barred with black. So the only option that matches up is the Brown Creeper.
