Weekly Bird Identification Quiz
February 8 - February 14, 2010
How to Identify:
This week’s quiz bird was easy to narrow down to a select few individuals just by the behavior of the bird. The nuthatches are one of the only birds that cling to trees upside down as the bird in the photo is doing. The combination of the blue back, white sides, and rufous in the vent and undertail coverts indentify this as a White-breasted Nuthatch. At times with a view like this a White-breasted can be misidentified as a Red-breasted due to the rufous but Red-breasted would never show that much white on the side or the same wing pattern.
