Weekly Bird Identification Quiz
February 15 - February 21, 2010
How to Identify:
This week’s quiz bird can quickly be identified as some species of sparrow. Luckily the combination of very little streaking on the sides and the large amount of gray on the head greatly reduces the possibilities. The wingbars eliminate a couple more of the possibilities. Basically the possibilities are American Tree, Field, and Chipping Sparrows. The dark legs and grayish flanks eliminate Field. The rufous eye line eliminates Chipping which has a dark eye line. The flanks are also to brown for Chipping which would show cold gray flanks.
