Weekly Bird Identification Quiz
March 1 - March 7, 2010
How to Identify:
This bird is easily recognizable as a species of grouse but the difficulty comes when differentiating between the grouse species. The crest on this grouse along with the habitat help eliminate all but two species, Ruffed and Sharp-tailed Grouse. Both of these species commonly sit in trees but the Ruffed prefers more forested areas while the Sharp-tailed prefers more open areas. The bold bars on the sides with a weak face pattern identify this as a Ruffed Grouse.
