Weekly Bird Identification Quiz
March 22 - March 28, 2010
How to Identify:
With the angle of this picture the identification was made much harder than usual for this species. Since it is in the water, many possibilities are eliminated. This bird is easily recognizable as a species of waterfowl. From this point it becomes more difficult. The small size of the body in addition to the large head/neck is the best place to start in identifying this bird. There are no other species other than grebes that would resemble this bird. In addition to this the overall light brown color and the very small bit of the pale bill we can see identify this bird as a Pied-billed Grebe.
