Weekly Bird Identification Quiz
April 5 - April 11, 2010
How to Identify:
This picture did not give a whole lot to go on especially since this bird does not have any significant field marks. But by shape and size alone this bird should be recognizable as a species of warbler. The short tail and slender bill are particularly good for identifying this as a species of warbler but the tail length also eliminates some warblers from the possibilities. The bill shape and size eliminate all of the vireos. Using the habitat as a clue also eliminates quite a few species. There aren’t too many warblers that can be seen in grassy areas. The overall olive coloration, brighter yellow on the rump, and weak eye ring identify this as a Common Yellowthroat.
