This property is owned by the Audubon Society.  It provides up close looks at many common south Florida birds.

Specialty Species:

Waders:  Many wading birds can be seen from the boardwalk. 

Limpkin:  Limpkins are commonly found on along the boardwalk.

Wood Stork:  Wood Storks nest on the property and can frequently found along the boardwalk.

Anhinga:  Anhingas are common in watery areas near the boardwalk.

Red-shouldered Hawk:  You can find Red-shouldered Hawks on the property throughout the year.  Remember that the subspecies found in South Florida is much more lightly colored than individuals found in other parts of the county.

Barred Owl:  Barred Owls can be found on the property throughout the year.

Swallow-tailed Kite:  During the spring and summer, watch for Swallow-tailed Kites flying overhead.

Painted Bunting:  During the winter, Painted Buntings can be found at the feeding station behind the nature center and at the feeders that are a few hundred yards up the boardwalk.

Where to Bird:

The Boardwalk:  There is only one way to bird this property - from the 2.25 mile long boardwalk.  In order to cut down on the disturbance to the wildlife, the Audubon Society built a huge boardwalk that goes around the property.  You can see all the species mentioned from the boardwalk.

Directions:

From the North and West:  Take I-75 South to Exit 111 for Immokalee Road.  Turn left (east) onto Immokalee Road.  After 15 miles, turn left (north) onto Sanctuary Road.  Stay on the paved road as it makes a 90° curve to the left.  At the end of the road, turn right into the parking lot.

From the Southeast:  Take I-75 West from Miami to Exit 80 for SR-29.  (You can also go north on SR-29 from US-41.)  Turn right (north) on to SR-29.  After 10 miles, turn left (west) onto Oil Well Road (CR- 858).  After 15.5 miles the road dead ends into Immokalee Road.  Turn right (north) onto Immokalee Road.  Go 5 miles and turn left (north) onto Sanctuary Road.  Stay on the paved road as it makes a 90° curve to the left.  At the end of the road, turn right into the parking lot.
