This heavily wooded park contains some of the best habitat for birds in the Indianapolis area.

Specialty Species:

Warblers:  Hike Fall Creek Trail for a chance at many warbler species from the spring-fall.  Watch along the creek for Prothonotary Warbler and both Waterthrushes.

Where to Bird:

Fall Creek Trail:  Hike this trail that follows Fall Creek for a chance to see many species of passerines. 

Walnut Plantation:  Hike this area for another chance at many species of passerines.

After entering the park, take your first right and drive to the Delaware Lake Parking Lot to hike the Fall Creek Trail.  Then take the road back the way you came and take your first right until you arrive at the Walnut Creek Trailhead Parking.  Hike this area for many species of passerines.

Fees:

$4 Monday-Thursday, $5 Friday-Sunday for Indiana plates
$7 Daily for non-Indiana plates

Accessiblity:

There is one multi-use trail that is paved and handicap accessible.

Directions:

From the West:  Go east on East 56th Street. Once you cross I-465, proceed 1.95 miles and turn left (north) onto North Post Road.  After 0.5 miles at the T-intersection, turn left (west) onto Shafter Road.  This road leads to the entrance station and then into the park.

From the East:  Go west on East 56th Street.  Once you cross Pendleton Pike, proceed 1.25 miles and turn right (north) onto North Post Road.  After 0.5 miles at the T-intersection, turn left (west) onto Shafter Road.  This road leads to the entrance station and then into the park.

From the South:  Go north on I-465.  Take the 56th Street/ Shadeland Avenue exit.  Exit onto 56th Street and turn right (east).  Go 1.83 miles and turn left (north) onto North Post Road. After 0.5 miles at the T-intersection, turn left (west) onto Shafter Road.  This road leads to the entrance station and then into the park.

From the North:  Go south on I-465.  Take the 56th Street exit and turn left (east) onto 56th Street.  Go 2.05 miles and turn left (north) onto North Post Road.  After 0.5 miles at the T-intersection, turn left (west) onto Shafter Road.  This road leads to the entrance station and then into the park.
