West Park is a small local park located on the west side of Carmel, Indiana.

Specialty Species:

Swamp Sparrow:  Look for this species around the pond in the front of the park.

Great Horned Owl:  Great Horned Owls nest in the small woodlot in the northeast corner of the park.  Look and listen for them as you walk through this area.

Where to Bird:

Boardwalk:  Walking on this boardwalk can be good during the spring, summer, and fall.  In the spring, there are many sparrows and you can usually find a Sora.  In the summer, there are many breeding swallows and Red-winged Blackbirds.  In the fall, there are many sparrows - the fall is usually the best time to bird on the boardwalk.

West Park Trail:  This trail leads you to the back of the property where there is a small prairie and a small woods.  During the spring and fall, the woods may hold many migrants or there may be nothing.  It is very hit or miss.  A pair of Great Horned Owls nest in these back woods as well.

Trails are located throughout the park, and there is one boardwalk through a marsh.

From the East:  Take 116th Street west from Meridian Street.  After 2.75 miles turn right (north) into West Park.

From the West:  Take 116th Street east from Michigan Road.  After 1.8 miles turn left (north) into West Park.
