This 8,062 acre fish and wildlife area is well-know for the abundance of Sandhill Cranes that visit the site each fall.

Specialty Species:

Sandhill Cranes:  Ten thousand or more Sandhill Cranes use this area as a resting and staging area each fall.

Whooping Cranes:  These birds can be found intermixed with the Sandhill Cranes.  Scan the flocks carefully and you just might find this rare treat.

Hawks:  In the winter, look for Northern Harrier and Rough-legged Hawks.

Where to Bird:

County Roads:  Drive the county roads throughout the FWA looking for cranes and hawks.

Sandhill Crane Observation Deck:  This is the best place to view the thousands of Sandhill Cranes that stop to rest in the area during migration.  Scan the flocks carefully for a chance to find a rare Whooping Crane.
