This 8,062 acre fish and wildlife area is well-know for the abundance of Sandhill Cranes that visit the site each fall.
Specialty Species:
Sandhill Cranes: Ten thousand or more Sandhill Cranes use this area as a resting and staging area each fall.
Whooping Cranes: These birds can be found intermixed with the Sandhill Cranes. Scan the flocks carefully and you just might find this rare treat.
Hawks: In the winter, look for Northern Harrier and Rough-legged Hawks.

County Roads: Drive the county roads throughout the FWA looking for cranes and hawks.
Sandhill Crane Observation Deck: This is the best place to view the thousands of Sandhill Cranes that stop to rest in the area during migration. Scan the flocks carefully for a chance to find a rare Whooping Crane.

From the South: Take I-65 north from Indianapolis. Take exit 178 for SR-43 and turn right (north) onto SR-43. After 17.5 miles, continue straight onto US-421. After 27 miles, turn left (west) onto W CR550 N/SR-143. After 1.5 miles, turn right (north) onto N CR1650 W. The parking area for the crane observation decks is located 0.2 miles down this road.
From the North: From Michigan City, take US-421 south for 37.5 miles. Turn right (west) onto W CR550 N/SR-143. After 1.5 miles, turn right (north) onto N CR1650 W. The parking area for the crane observation decks is located 0.2 miles down this road.
