McCormick’s Creek is a heavily wooded park that provides the opportunity for tons of hiking and birding.

Specialty Species:

Pine Siskin, Purple Finch and Red-breasted Nuthatch:  Check the feeders at the nature center during the late fall and winter.

Warblers:  Hike the trails throughout the park to find many warbler species during migration.

Woodpeckers:  Check the area around the nature center to find all seven regularly occurring woodpeckers.  All but the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker are present all year.

American Woodcock:  Check the fields by the Saddle Barn during the early spring to see Woodcocks performing their mating displays.

Where to Bird:

Nature Center:  Check the feeders at the nature center to find winter specialties such as Pine Siskin, Purple Finch, and Red-breasted Nuthatch.  Woodpeckers are also found around the nature center.  There are usually good numbers of Red-headed Woodpeckers near the front doors.

Nature Trails:  Hike the trails throughout the park looking for migrant passerines.

Saddle Barn:  Park at the saddle barn and check the fields around the barn for displaying Woodcocks during the early spring.

Directions:

From the West:  Take SR-46 east out of Spencer.  The park entrance is on the left (north) about 1.5 miles outside of Spencer.

From the East:  Take SR-46 west out of Bloomington.  The park entrance is on the right (north) about 12.5 miles past the intersection of SR-37 and SR-46 in Bloomington.

From the North:  From the intersection of I-70 and SR-43, take SR-43 south toward Spencer.  When SR-43 comes to a T-intersection in Spencer, take a left (east) onto SR-46.  The park entrance is located on the left (north) about 1.5 miles from this intersection.

From the South:  Take SR-67 north toward Spencer.  As you enter Spencer, curve to the right to stay on SR-67.  Instead of turning right to stay on SR-67, continue straight onto SR-46.  The park entrance is located on the left (north) about 1.5 miles from this intersection.
